Holistic Hands On Experiential Learning
Outdoor School, Forest School & Nature School are often interchangeable names. They are outside nature based programs. These programs focus on the whole child, learning by doing and hands on experiential learning. It resonates with children, and teens. They learn faster and understand more deeply. Forest Schools – Outdoor Schools such as Explorers Outdoor School, often have play-based curriculum with the freedom to explore, developing their skills, interests and understanding the natural world around them.
Our teen program continues to grow in a variety of interests & classes. We will continue to offer more work trades & skills classes, hand work and opportunities to develop their interests, and work experience.
WE ARE A STRONG COMBINATION OF EACH LEARNING MODALITY & ENVIRONMENT
EXPLORERS OUTDOOR SCHOOL IS EARTH SCHOOL WELCOME
We welcome you to be part of a community of like-minded amazing people & open the door to connected friendships for your children, and your family.
Hands on Core Classes, Skill Based Classes and Play Based Classes. Choose one class a week, sign up for classes to fill a day, or a few days a week. We support and enrich your own family curriculum & interests through a class or day camp.
We are a Drop-Off program, with some family classes, and parent-tot classes too.

What to Bring & Be Prepared For Class :
Winter Gear : February & March and as long as needed
Snow Clothes head to toe: clothes made for the snow
Beanie, stocking cap ( a jacket hood is extra a hat is still needed)
Snow pants or full step in winter over clothes
Layers on top and bottom
Snow Gloves (no cotton gloves unless its for inside snow gloves)
Wool or very warm socks (wool works best as they stay warm even if they get wet)
Snow Boots : no rain boots until spring : rain boots are very cold in the winter
Warm Jacket that zips
Younger Kids : Practice with your child to manage clothing, putting on gloves and jacket, practice zipping, putting on hat with gloves on. Going to the bathroom and managing the snow clothes.
Warm drinks, even warm water is helpful and warm food in a thermal container is helpful.
Food in a container, not a bag please. Bags are hard for the kids to manage, and fly around and become garbage at the school. They often don't realize their bags and packages flew away. Containers help the kids put their food packing away in the container.
Explorers Outdoor School - Earth School
(formerly Coyote Willow Cooperative)
At Explorers Outdoor School of Idaho we flow with the rhythm of the seasons, We are a unique combination of natural environments & cultivation, with our little woods, gardens, seasonal stream & pond, held on a natural farm. We have class among the wandering lamb, friendly turkey & goats. We hold bunnies and exposed to a variety of natural elements including learning the nature of a variety of animals and their calming effect. We have lessons under the willow tree, in the garden and hold class at times in the tipi. Our permanent school gives us a home, a sense of belonging and ownership, familiarity. This also helps us to have supplies on hand, and an option to variety of environments within a class day.
Outdoor learning fosters resilience and heightens awareness of the natural world around you. Our curriculum & philosophy allows children to be kids. Love learning. Encourages and teaches holistic learning. We flow with the seasons, offering variety and increases experiential learning. We help develop independence and confidence to give it a try and see how they fly, and they do. We encourage one another, practice social-emotional skills and supported as we do. We create & build both in activity, the child and our tribe her at Explorers Outdoor School of Idaho. It’s a great place to be a kid. Come earth school with us!

Some Testimonials From Our Parents
"Our experience for the past 4 years at Explorers Outdoor School has been nothing short of phenomenal. The outdoor classroom lends a magical immersive learning environment where kids can imagine up anything their hearts desire while also being taught in such a gentle way. The way you can piece together whatever classes interest your child is the perfect addition to our homeschool routine. The teachers are nurturing and attentive while also allowing our children’s natural sense of curiosity and wonder to grow. Ms. Crista, the owner is one of the most gentle and caring souls and always goes above and beyond to keep us informed, excitedly sharing their day. Explorers is such a magical place where our kids can grow, play, learn and thrive in the beautiful outdoors, just the way it was intended!"
- Miah
"My children have been attending Explorers Outdoor School for a couple years now. They’ve done semester classes, session classes, summer camps, and winter camps and have loved all of them! Explorers Outdoor School is such a safe place for kids to really be kids. They learn so many unique skills, make beautiful friendships, and have fun! Crista is so caring, kind, flexible, and knowledgeable and she truly encourages the unique growth of each child. The time my children spend at Explorers really is a highlight of their week and our family is so grateful that classes continue to grow and expand to fit the needs of students as they mature and develop new interests. We highly recommend Explorers to anyone but especially those who value getting back to basics, being outdoors, and having their kids build childhood relationships in a safe and supportive place. "
- Carissa
"As a homeschooling family we feel quite fortunate to have such a wonderful program where our child can have fun socializing and learning while playing outdoors in a safe nurturing environment.
Crista Legg has superseded our expectations on countless occasions with all the many wonderful, enriching classes she has to offer. Her extensive knowledge and personal experiences provide children with an opportunity to experience an environment that is unique, inspiring and meaningful.
We appreciate the “whole body, whole mind, whole child” approach Crista cultivates.
We look forward to being part of the Outdoor Family for many more years to come!"
- Emily
"My boys have been attending Explorers Outdoor School of Idaho for the last 2 years now and absolutely love it. Shortly after attending their first few weeks, we knew it was a place they would be coming for a long time (as long as they can)! We make a commitment to travel from South Boise out to Middleton two times a week (approximately 45-60min depending on the day and weather) for both of them to attend in the rain, snow, sleet or sunshine. No matter the weather, the boys ALWAYS have a great time and learn so much about things that ACTUALLY MATTER! Thanks Crista for all you do!"
- Julianne & Family
"Explorers Outdoor School has been one of the best things we’ve added to our kids’ days. They are exposed to so many different opportunities and come home as if they’ve had the best day! Being outdoors and learning this way has been so much fun to watch! We love that we have this option to enhance their learning!"
- Jennifer
Explorers Outdoor School is everything we’ve ever wanted in a school! My kids learn so much and have fun while doing it. There’s so many unique classes to choose from and I know they’re not just sitting in a desk doing busy work all day. They’re out exploring and learning life long skills while also being educated. Thank you Miss Crista and all of the amazing teachers, we’re forever grateful for you all!
